About Steve

Representative Steve Thompson is serving his 3rd year as a Representative in the Alaska State Legislature and represents District 3 (Fairbanks, Fort Wainwright, & sections of North Pole). This session he sits on the House Finance Committee and chaired two House Finance Subcommittees: Department of Military & Veterans’ Affairs and Department of Revenue.

Steve was born in Cottage Grove, Oregon in 1944. He moved to Fairbanks in 1965. He attended school in Oregon: Sutherlin High School, Class of 1962; Oregon Technical Institute 1962-63; and Southern Oregon College in Ashland, Oregon 1963-65. His major course of study was business and economics.

Steve moved to Fairbanks when he served in the U.S. Army at Fort Wainwright in 1965. His service in the Army ranged from 1965-67. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant E-5.

Shortly thereafter, Steve began working at M&O Auto Parts in Fairbanks. After a few years as an employee, he bought into a partnership and owned 1/3 of the business. Later, he became the general manager and the sole owner. He sold the business in 2000 when he retired. He had the business for 33 years.

Steve ran for the position as Mayor of Fairbanks in 2001. He defeated five other challengers including two incumbent members of the city council. He was re-elected in 2004 and was termed-out. While Mayor he secured funding to build a city fire department headquarters and fire station, had underground utilities installed, balanced the City budget, and maintained fiscal stability.

Steve also served on the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District Budget Review Committee (2004) and the Alaska State Workers’ Compensation Board (1986-1993). He has volunteered in many organizations throughout the years:

Steve is the proud father of 5 children and grandfather to 10. He is married to Kathleen and they reside in Fairbanks.

His hobbies and interests include: fishing, hunting, golfing, and rafting.
